nazis at play

did you all hear about this exhibit coming to the holocaust museum? it’s a collection of photos taken by an SS guard at Aushwitz. It’s a facsinating look at the Nazis as people. The photos almost make them look like they are at summer camp.

during the run and preparation for EITHER OR last year we talked a great deal about humanizing the nazis. Seeing these photos, especially next to the gruesome photos of prisoners at the camps, certainly makes the Nazis look more like monsters. ‘How can they relax when such horrors were happening?’ I imagine people asking. But wouldn’t you think with the terrible things they were doing and seeing they would need a way to escape.

See Carl Cannon’s books “The Pursuit of Happiness in Times of War” or Hannah Arendt’s “The Banality of Evil”. Of course, I have not seen either.
